NEW DELHI – Regarding the Centre's move to take over Lutyens' Delhi properties such as Delhi Gymkhana Club and the polo ground, the Delhi High Court Monday said, "Delhi will choke. God save us all if this is how you want Delhi to live." Green spaces in Delhi are anyway scarce and the "little green space" remaining in the area is also being taken over, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna said.
Justice Krishna questioned whether the Centre was planning to make high rises in the area around Lutyens' Delhi. The little breather for citizens in the area would also be taken away from them, she said.
The high court asked the trial court to decide the Indian Polo Association's application seeking a stay on the Centre's eviction notice. The trial court will hear the Indian Polo Association's plea on Wednesday, said the high court.
The Centre had defended its eviction notice to the polo association and said the land was required for public and defence purposes. There is limited space in the central Delhi area and the government's functions need to be carried out from this area, the Centre said.
Last month, the high court said that eviction of the Delhi Gymkhana Club from the land leased to it by the Centre in 1928 would be only after giving prior notice and in accordance with law. The high court issued summons to the Land and Development Office under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on a plea by Delhi Gymkhana Club, challenging the move to take back the land for strengthening and securing defence infrastructure.
