NEW DELHI - India's merchandise exports rose 15% in the first two months of 2026-27 (April-Mar), a government official said Monday. Goods exports had risen 13.8% on year to $43.56 billion in April, the highest since March 2022, implying that outbound shipments rose even quicker in May.
According to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, India's non-oil exports rose 11% in Apr-May. In April, non-petroleum exports rose 9% on year to $33.97 billion. India's exports have remained resilient in the face of external pressures – first the 50% tariff by the US in FY26 and now the war in West Asia.
India and the UK have made some progress on the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which has been delayed by Britain's new curbs on steel imports, the official said. Starting Jul. 1, the UK will cut quotas on steel imports by 60% and raise duties outside those quotas to 50% in an effort to shield domestic steel producers. These curbs were not factored in when the trade agreement was being negotiated between India and the UK.
Under the trade deal, the UK has committed to tariff concessions on 99% of Indian goods exports to the country. New Delhi has also offered duty cuts on 90% tariff lines. End
