NEW DELHI – Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has lashed out at the Narendra Modi government for "misgovernance", which he said resulted in the country facing multiple economic, social, and foreign policy challenges at the same time. In his opening remarks at the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance meeting here, Kharge red-flagged the issue of special intensive revision of electoral rolls, saying this was depriving millions of people of their right to vote.

"We showed our solidarity and unity in a very decisive manner in the Lok Sabha on Apr. 17, when we all came together strongly and defeated the malicious government bills on delimitation," the veteran Congress leader said.

"Now we have to further strengthen that spirit and take it forward, so that we can face the many political, economic, social and foreign policy challenges facing the country due to the misgovernance of the Modi government," he added.

The opposition INDIA bloc is holding a key strategy meeting amid questions over unity in the alliance following recent electoral setbacks, and tensions among some partners. Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress' Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal's Tejashwi Yadav, Nationalist Congress Party (SP)'s Supriya Sule, J&K National Conference's Omar Abdullah, Peoples' Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader John Brittas were among the opposition leaders attending the meeting at the Constitution Club. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray is expected to join virtually.

"The attack on the Constitution of India continues. Investigative agencies are increasingly being used as a tool to harass and intimidate political opponents. Non-BJP governments are being discriminated against," Kharge said, adding that prices of essential commodities are continuously increasing.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Aam Aadmi Party stayed away from the meeting despite an outreach by the Trinamool Congress, which had initiated the call for the meeting.  End
