NEW DELHI – The number of e-way bills generated in May rose 10.9% on year to 136.08 million, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. The 10.9% on-year growth in e-way bill generation last month was the slowest since October.
In April, e-way bills generated had moderated to 133.37 million from an all-time high of 140.60 million in March. An e-way bill is a GST document for the transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is considered a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.
An increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions will be reflected in the next month's collections. India's GST collections grew 3.2% on year to INR 1.94 trillion in May, after accounting for a one-time payment of INR 100 billion made by a telecom operator for spectrum allocation in May 2025. Adjusted for this one-time payment, gross GST revenue grew 9% on year last month. End
