AHMEDABAD/NEW DELHI – Eli Lilly's Mounjaro continued to maintain its position as the highest-selling pharmaceutical brand in the glucagon-like peptide-1 segment in India in May, according to Pharmatrac's Indian Pharmaceutical Market May data discussed during a webinar on Monday.

The country's anti-obesity market was valued at around INR 20 billion till May. India's pharmaceutical market recorded an 11% growth in value terms in May, with leading therapies posting a double-digit growth, said Sheetal Sapale, vice president, Commercial, Pharmatrac. The anti-obesity segment, driven largely by glucagon-like peptide-1 therapies, witnessed slower growth in May compared with April, although it continued to expand in value terms.

Semaglutide remained the key driver of growth in the glucagon-like peptide-1 market, boosted by improved affordability following the launch of generic versions in March. However, growth in semaglutide generics appeared to be stabilising, indicating that the market was moving beyond the initial generic launch-led expansion phase.

A significant portion of patients who were previously unable to access glucagon-like peptide-1 therapies due to high costs may have already entered the treatment pool, Sapale said. Sustained growth in the segment would require expansion of the eligible patient base, she added.

Despite rising competition from generics, innovator glucagon-like peptide-1 brands have remained resilient, according to Sapale. As per the Pharmatrac May report, seven of the 35 semaglutide brands marketed by 17 companies recorded an upward trend in May over April. However, with overall market growth slowing, some brands have begun showing negative traction, raising the possibility of inventory build-up in the semaglutide generics segment.

Despite signs of moderation in the overall market growth, several semaglutide brands continued to gain traction in May. Among injectable products, Novo Nordisk's Ozempic posted a 27% growth in monthly units sold, while Eris Lifesciences Ltd. Sundae grew 29%. Sun Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Noveltreat and Sematrinity recorded growth of 124% and 66%, respectively, while Alkem Laboratories Ltd. Hepaglide rose 20%. Among oral semaglutide brands, Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Semalix and Sembolic grew 19% and 32%, respectively, in April.

The research firm also noted that tirzepatide has returned to its pre-generic-launch growth trajectory, indicating continued physician preference for innovator therapies. Positive trends in innovator brands despite the influx of lower-cost generic alternatives suggest sustained confidence among specialists in evidence-based products, it said.

The research firm also gave three reasons on which the futuristic growth of the glucose-like-peptide-1 growth market will depend, such as patient sustenance, dropouts which will determine the repurchase of the medicine, new patient onboarding, and government advisories leading to stringent patient onboarding norms.

Pharmatrac data showed broad-based growth across leading pharmaceutical companies in May, with Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. posting a 16.6% value growth, USV Pvt. Ltd. 14.1%, Ipca Laboratories Ltd. 14.0%, Aristo Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. 12.0%, and GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd. 9.5%. Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. and Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd. reported a growth of 8.0% and 8.7%, respectively, while Eris Lifesciences grew 9.2%.  End
