India received 31% below-normal rainfall at 2.8 mm Sunday, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 2.8 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, 31% below the normal of 4.1 millimetres for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. From Jun. 1-7, rainfall in the country was 22% below normal at 17.9 millimetres.

 

Of the four homogenous regions in the country, three recorded below-normal rainfall while one received above-normal showers, the data showed. Rainfall in south peninsula India was above-normal at 5.7 millimetres on Sunday, 7% above normal for the period. The Southwest monsoon trough advanced over Kerala and subsequently over most parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and some parts of Andhra Pradesh during the second half of last week. This triggered spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall over most parts of south India, which is likely to continue for the next few days.

 

In central India, rainfall on Sunday was 59% below normal at 1.3 millimetres, while in east and northeast India, it was 43% below normal at 5.3 millimetres, the data showed. Northwest India received 1.3 millimetres of showers, which was 17% below the normal of 1.6 millimetres. 

 

In the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large-deficient" in 14, "deficient" in eight, "large excess" in six, "normal" in four, and "excess" in one, the data showed. Three sub-divisions did not record any rainfall on Sunday.  End
