India received 18% below normal rainfall at 2.5 mm Thursday, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 2.5 millimetres of rainfall Thursday, 18% below the normal of 3.1 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. From Jun. 1-4, the country received 8.5 millimetres of rainfall, 26% below the normal weighted average of 11.5 millimetres for the period, the data showed.
The southwest monsoon advanced over Kerala on Thursday, three days after the normal date of Jun. 1. However, according to the weather department, the season starts on Jun. 1 and ends on Sept. 30, regardless of when monsoon actually set in and when it withdraws.
Of the four homogenous regions in the country, two received below-normal showers, while rainfall in the other two was normal, data from the weather department showed. Rainfall over east and northeast India and south peninsula India was 7.4 millimetres and 3.8 millimetres, respectively, which is on a par with normal for the period.
In northwest India, rainfall was 50% below normal at 0.6 millimetres. Central India recorded 1.3 millimetres of precipitation, 46% below the normal of 2.4 millimetres.
Of the 36 subdivisions, rainfall on Thursday was "large deficient" in 16, "deficient" in nine, "large excess" in five, "normal" in four, and "excess" in one subdivision. One subdivision did not record any rainfall, the data showed. End
