NEW DELHI – The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Thursday announced that it will not participate in the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance's meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi Monday. The party has made its displeasure known over the Indian National Congress deciding to join hands with Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form a coalition government in Tamil Nadu. The Congress had fought the assembly election as a part of the alliance headed by the DMK, the state's former ruling party.

"The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will not participate in the INDIA alliance meeting in Delhi on Jun. 8, where the Congress is taking part!" it said in a social media post. The party, however, clarified that it will stand with like-minded parties on issues concerning the nation.

The DMK said the decision was taken in view of the sentiments of its cadres who continue to feel "deeply hurt by what they consider the betrayal committed by the Congress party".

The Congress has said its alliance with the TVK was "not only for the formation of this government, but also for future elections to the local body organisations, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha". The TVK has allotted to the Congress the sole Rajya Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu for which an election is to be held later this month.

The DMK added that on issues "raised by other parties included in this meeting that harm the nation's welfare, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will always raise its voice".

With 22 Lok Sabha members, the DMK is the fourth-largest constituent of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance. The Congress, with 99 seats, is the leading partner, followed by the Samajwadi Party with 37 seats and the All India Trinamool Congress with 29. The opposition alliance has 234 members in the 543-member Lok Sabha.  End
