MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala as of Thursday, three days after its normal date of Jun. 1, the India Meteorological Department said in a release. The monsoon trough has covered Kerala and Lakshadweep Islands entirely as of Thursday, the weather department said. It has also advanced over the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea, the Comorin Area, most parts of the Bay of Bengal, and some parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the department said.
Currently, the monsoon trough passes through Mangalore in Karnataka and Uthagamandalam, Kodaikanal, and Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, the weather bureau said. Conditions are favourable for the further advance of the trough over entire Goa, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some more parts of Karnataka and the Bay of Bengal, and some parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and the northeastern states in the next two to three days, the bureau said.
In the past two days, the convective cloudiness increased over the southeast Arabian Sea. The depth of westerlies over the region extends up to 4.5 kilometres above the mean sea level. The strength of westerlies in the lower levels is about 20–25 knots. There has been widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala in the past two days. Considering these conditions satisfied, the southwest monsoon made its onset over Kerala on Thursday, the weather department said.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of coastal Karnataka and Kerala till Monday, and over Tamil Nadu from Friday to Sunday. End
