MUMBAI – Central banks resumed net gold purchases in April, buying 17 tonnes, after sizeable net sales of about 30 tonnes in March, the World Gold Council said in a report. The recovery in demand was driven largely by the National Bank of Poland, which added 14 tonnes to its reserves in April.
Poland's year-to-date gold purchases stood at 45 tonnes, with its gold reserves at 595 tonnes or about 30% of its total reserves, it said. People's Bank of China added 8 tonnes to its gold reserves during the month, the highest since December 2024. Official gold reserves now stand at 9% of total reserves or around 2,322 tonnes, according to the report.
Eastern European and Asian central banks continue to dominate gold purchases. "Over the past 36 months, both regions have purchased 12 tonnes and 11 tonnes per month on average collectively," WGC said. Global central bank activity shows average net purchases of 29 tonnes over the same period.
China has been consistently purchasing gold over the past 18 consecutive months, it said. Czech National Bank's modest but consistent 2 tonnes of net purchases in April brought its gold reserves to 79 tonnes or 6% of its total reserves.
Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan sold 1 tonne of gold in April. But on a year-to-date basis, it remained a net purchaser at 24 tonnes and is second only to Poland. Uzbekistan's reserves make up 88% of its total reserves or around 414 tonnes, according to the report. The Central Bank of Russia continued its recent streak of net sales for the fourth month with reported net sales of 6 tonnes in April.
"March's top seller, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, reported virtually flat gold reserves in April, with weekly data showing that short-term gold/USD swaps matured in April, leaving only longer-term (1-3 month) gold/USD swaps outstanding," the report said. End
