--US Gor: US to release details of terms that will allow reduction of tariffs
MUMBAI – The US is likely to release details of terms that will allow countries to get tariffs on their exports to the world's largest economy reduced, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said Wednesday on the sidelines of the Citi India Conference 2026. The US Trade Representative Tuesday proposed a tariff of 12.5% on India and several other nations due to their failure to impose and effectively enforce a forced-labour import prohibition.
"They (the US Trade Representative) will actually release a report on the items...there will be a full report, that will be announced very soon," Gor said in response to a question on what steps India could take to bring down the tariff under Section 301 of the US Trade Act. The trade representative proposed tariffs of at least 10% on 60 trading partners that make up over 99% of US imports.
The proposal comes amid ongoing trade deal talks between Washington and New Delhi, with a US negotiating team on a visit to India until Thursday. The interim trade agreement between the two countries was 99% complete with largely the technicalities being negotiated and the pact is likely to be announced in the new week, Gor said at the event.
