Over 20 dead, many injured in Delhi restaurant fire, PM condoles loss of lives

NEW DELHI – Over 20 people are feared dead and several injured in a fire at a restaurant in Delhi's Malviya Nagar on Wednesday. Ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames and rescue people stranded in the six-storey building.
Some people from the floors above jumped out of the building on mattresses laid on the road by locals.
Jitendra Kumar, sub-divisional magistrate, Delhi Disaster Management Authority of south district, told mediapersons that the cause of the fire was still unknown. "A restaurant was operating on the ground floor of this building. The cause of the fire is still not known. Four bodies have been retrieved so far," Kumar said. Around eight injured persons were taken to the hospital for treatment, he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia of INR 200,000 to the next of kin of each deceased and INR 50,000 to each injured, from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
Through a social media post, Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge urged local party workers to extend every possible help and support to the victims. End
