AHMEDABAD - Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports in April rose a mere 2.37% on year to 737.60 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. This was mainly because of the fall in crude oil and petroleum products cargo due to the West Asian military conflict that saw closure of the Strait of Hormuz since Feb. 29. Crude oil and petroleum products generally account for nearly a third of the total cargo handled at all major ports across country.
Crude oil and petroleum products cargoes fell nearly 8% on year to 198 million tonnes in April. The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, meanwhile, rose 6.31% on year to 24.92 million tonnes. Other than crude oil and other liquid cargo, container traffic increased 7.83% on year to 183.78 million tonnes.
West Asia is also a key supplier of raw fertiliser for India. With the marine route blocked, the raw fertiliser cargo handled by major ports slumped nearly 47% on year to 4.11 million tonnes in April. The volume of finished fertilisers imported in the first month of 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) jumped 23.42% on year to 5.85 million tonnes.
The cargo volume of thermal coal rose 0.14% on year to 119.01 million tonnes and coking coal fell 5.83% on year to 53.34 million tonnes in April. Miscellaneous traffic was up 31.92% at 107.86 million tonnes. Meanwhile, the volume of iron ore pellets fell 2.81% to 40.75 million tonnes.
Among ports, Paradip Port handled the highest traffic at 126.08 million tonnes, followed closely by Deendayal port of Kandla at 117.49 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 96.18 million tonnes.
