NEW DELHI – The NPCI International Payments Ltd., the international arm of National Payments Corp. of India, has launched Unified Payments Interface in Cambodia in partnership with ACLEDA Bank Plc. UPI payments will be accepted in Cambodia through KHQR, Cambodia's national QR code, the NPCI said in a release Tuesday.

This marks the official launch of the first phase of cross-border QR payment linkage between Cambodia and India, the release said. "Indian users can now scan Bakong's KHQR, Cambodia's standard and interoperable QR code system, at over 4.5 million merchant outlets to make secure and seamless QR-based payments across tourist attractions, restaurants, retail outlets and other establishments using their UPI-enabled apps," the release said.

In the next phase of the payment linkage programme, visitors from Cambodia will be able to use their Cambodian payment and banking apps to pay at UPI QR-enabled merchant locations in India. This will establish "a two-way interoperable payment corridor between the two countries."

"This initiative is expected to deliver smooth, real-time, and interoperable digital transaction capabilities, strengthening efficiencies across payments in India and the Cambodia Payment Corridor," NPCI said. "In the first phase, merchants in Cambodia will gain access to a large Indian customer base, while benefiting from improved cash management and reduced dependence on physical currency, enabling greater operational efficiency."

The adoption of UPI by QR code-based merchants is increasing across the globe. It is currently operational in Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates, according to the Reserve Bank of India.  End
