MUMBAI – US President Donald Trump on Monday signed a proclamation amending tariffs on certain metals, the White House said in a fact sheet update late on Monday. This included a reduction in tariffs on a range of agricultural and industrial equipment and broadening the scope of industrial equipment eligible for the lower tariffs, along with incentives designed to strengthen domestic metal production. These tariff changes will be in effect till Dec. 31, 2027, the White House said.

Under the proclamation, tariffs on agricultural equipment, such as combines, harvesters and other equipment, are lowered to 15% from 25%. The proclamation is also expanding the existing category of industrial equipment subject to a 15% tariff to include mobile industrial equipment, such as bulldozers and forklifts, when imported from countries covered under the US trade agreements, which are entitled to such treatment, the White House said.

To strengthen domestic metal production in the US, the proclamation states that foreign companies will be eligible for a lower 10% duty rate if their capital equipment includes at least 85% US-melted and poured or smelted and cast steel or aluminium by weight, the White House said.

The proclamation aims to effectively address national security threats, spur investment in the US agriculture, housing, and manufacturing, and facilitate production of related products, the White House said. "President Trump has utilised tariffs on imported aluminium, steel, and copper to protect the national security of the United States, the economic resilience of vital industries, and the financial position of American families, communities, and businesses from the threat of low-priced imports," it said.  End
