NEW DELHI – India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and UK's Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle will on Tuesday discuss Britain's new limits on steel imports and carbon border adjustment mechanism, according to a ministry official. Implementation of a trade deal with the UK is facing a delay because of new curbs on steel imports starting Jul. 1.

Kyle is likely to visit without a delegation, which could be a signal that the deal is on track of becoming operational, an official said. The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, signed in July, was expected to be operationalised in May. Kyle will also meet Indian and British industry leaders with the aim to help businesses prepare for the deal to come into force, a UK government release said.

The UK will limit tariff-free steel imports from Jul. 1, which will reduce overall quota volumes by 60% compared to the steel safeguard measure. Any imports beyond these levels will bear a 50% tariff.

A commerce ministry official said India may reconsider concessions on British scotch to counter Britain's safeguard measures. The country plans to reduce duty on UK whisky and gin from 150% to 75% and further to 40% in the 10th year of the deal.  End
