NEW DELHI – The Central government met its fiscal deficit target of 4.4% of GDP for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), data released Monday by the Controller General of Accounts showed. In absolute terms, the government's fiscal deficit in FY26 was INR 15.192 trillion, accounting for 97.5% of the revised target of INR 15.585 trillion, data showed. The fiscal deficit was 4.8% in FY25.

 

The government's total expenditure rose 5.4% on year to INR 49.052 trillion in FY26, accounting for 98.8% of the revised Budget target. Total receipts increased 10.0% to INR 33.860 trillion, making up for 99.4% of the revised Budget target for FY26.

 

Capital expenditure rose just 1.6% to INR 10.691 trillion in FY26, falling short of the revised Budget target by INR 266 billion. 

 

The government's gross tax mop-up rose 6.0% on year to INR 40.243 trillion in FY26, but fell short of the revised target of INR 40.778 trillion for the year.

 

The revenue deficit was 1.6% of GDP in FY26, higher than the revised Budget estimate of 1.5%. The effective revenue deficit was 0.8% of GDP in FY26, also higher than the revised Budget target of 0.6%. 


For March, the government's fiscal deficit was INR 2.665 trillion, up 17.1% from a year ago. Capital expenditure during the month fell 42% on year to INR 1.340 trillion.
