NEW DELHI – "Beware of pickpockets. They are sitting inside the CBSE now," Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said Monday, criticising the Central Board of Secondary Education for allegedly charging students for its own mistakes.

"A student may have to shell out upto INR 2,000 for correct evaluation of his answer sheet," Gandhi posted on X. "What do you get when wrong marking is done due to CBSE's fault? You get a bill - digital scan copy: INR 100 per subject, re-totalling: INR 100 per paper, re-evaluation: INR 25 per question."

After the CBSE released the class 12 results on May 13, a large number of students and parents reported glaring discrepancies, including blurred pages, unmarked answers, and receipt of scanned copies of someone else's answer sheets with different handwriting. Around 1.7 million students had taken the exam.

Gandhi said that since around 400,000 students have requested re-evaluation, one can calculate how much money the CBSE is making. "CBSE at fault, punishment for student, and moolah for the government," he added.

Separately, Indian National Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera demanded to know who exactly ordered the dilution of the scan quality of the answer sheets. "Why did CBSE ignore the various concerns raised by teachers regarding the on-screen marking? Why were technical eligibility criteria for outsourcing changed repeatedly?" Khera asked at a press conference here.

Media reports have cited an internal observation report from a dry run of the CBSE's on-screen marking system, conducted at five Delhi schools in January, wherein teachers flagged at least 36 technical, operational, and evaluation-related concerns.

The Congress spokesperson pointed out that the country's budgetary allocation for education under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently declined, coming down to 2.6% of the total estimated Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) from 4.7% in FY14.

"A tsunami is coming. A whole generation is being destroyed while the prime minister is busy giving recipes of aam panna etc. And if youngsters ask questions, they are labelled anti-national by the BJP ecosystem. What will our youth aspire for in these conditions?" Khera said.

In response to a query regarding the solicitor general assuring the Supreme Court during a hearing on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test paper leak that the prime minister was "personally supervising" the matter, Khera said, "This is rather a threat than an assurance."  End
