NEW DELHI – India's goods and services tax collections grew just 3.2% on year to INR 1.942 trillion in May, government data released Monday showed. On a month-on-month basis, May's GST collection was 20% lower than April's. This was the second month when the government did not collect anything from cess after the pending payments under it were cleared.
The government had collected INR 2.427 trillion in April. According to the government release, May 2025 GST revenue included a one-time payment of INR 100 billion by a telecom operator for spectrum allocation. Adjusted for this one-time payment, total GST revenue grew 9% in May 2026, it said. "With no one-time payment in May 2026, adjusted growth is therefore the right measure to evaluate the GST performance for the month," the government said.
Domestic GST revenue during May fell 2.6% on year to INR 1.345 trillion, the release said. This would have been 5% higher on year had it not been for the one-time gain in the same month last year. Import revenue was 19.1% higher on year in May at INR 597 billion, but was sharply lower from the INR 958 billion collected in April.
GST revenue, net of refunds, rose 3.3% on year to INR 1.669 trillion in May. Refunds during the month rose 2.6% on year to INR 273 billion. The post-settlement revenue of states was INR 2.057 trillion in May, up 23% on year. "Adjusted Net GST revenue growth in May 2026 was 10.1%," the release said.
Central GST collection in May was INR 374 billion, up from INR 354 billion a year ago. State GST collection last month was INR 451 billion, up from INR 439 billion collected in May 2025. Integrated GST mop-up was INR 1.942 trillion, up from INR 1.882 trillion a year ago.
As per the Budget estimates, the government's GST collections in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) are projected to grow 6.3% on year. Collectively, in the first two months of FY27, GST collections grew 6.2% to INR 4.369 trillion. "This cumulative YoY performance is healthy and in the right direction to achieve the full-year GST revenue target," according to government sources. End
