M&M May SUV despatches rises 11% YoY, co flags manpower shortages

MUMBAI – Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. Monday said domestic despatches of its sports utility vehicles grew 11% on year to 58,021 units. The company said it saw sustained demand across its portfolio but flagged supply chain challenges because of manpower shortages at select suppliers. Including exports, despatches of its SUVs grew to 59,573 vehicles.

 

Overall, the company sold 99,636 automobiles in May, up 20%. Alongside passenger vehicles, the company sold 24,079 commercial vehicles to dealerships in May, up 19% on year. Its total vehicle exports surged 37% on year to 5,000 units.

 

Among commercial vehicles, the company sold 12,536 three-wheelers in May, up a staggering 89% on year. The despatches of light commercial vehicles with a payload capacity under 2 tonnes grew 35% on year to 3,490 units. Sales of those with a payload capacity exceeding 2 tonnes but below 3.5 tonnes grew 16% on year to 20,589 units in May. 

 

In Apr-May, the company sold 114,352 SUVs in India, up 9% on year. The company has sold 22,435 three-wheelers in FY27 so far, up 85% on year. Exports in Apr-May climbed 42% on year to 9,970 units.

 

TRACTOR SEGMENT

M&M sold 49,695 tractors to dealerships in India and overseas in May, up 22% on year. This includes domestic tractor sales of 47,845 units, up 23% on year and export sales of 1,850 units, up 7%. "This high growth was driven by timely completion of Rabi harvesting & favorable terms of trade for farmers," said Veejay Nakra, the president of M&M's farm equipment business, in a release.

 

In Apr-May, M&M sold 98,106 tractors, up 22% on year. Domestic tractor sales in this financial year so far has grown 22% on year to 94,249 units while exports have risen 18% to 3,857 units.

 

TRUCKS, BUSES

M&M sold 3,129 automobiles under its trucks and buses business, up 18% on year. This includes 1,362 vehicles sold by Mahindra Trucks & Buses, up 24% on year, and 1,767 buses sold by SML Mahindra Ltd., up 15%.

 

"The CV industry continues to face near-term headwinds, driven by elevated input costs and higher diesel prices amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, putting pressure on fleet operators' profitability," said Vinod Sahay, the executive chairman of SML Mahindra and president of M&M's aerospace, advanced technologies, trucks, buses and construction equipment segment.

 

"The industry is showing signs of short to medium term moderation even though structural drivers such as infrastructure spending and replacement demand remain supportive for long term growth. We maintain an overall cautious outlook as cost pressures and macroeconomic uncertainties continue to weigh on industry sentiments currently," Sahay said.

 

For the March quarter, the company had reported net profit of INR 37.37 billion on revenues of INR 395.54 billion. At 1009 IST, its shares traded 1.1% lower at INR 3,012 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
