MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon advanced into some more parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Comorin area, and the Bay of Bengal Saturday, the India Meteorological Department said. Some parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu are also likely to see the onset of the monsoon in the next 4-5 days, the weather department said.
The presence and movement of the monsoon wave have set off multiple weather systems over and near the country, causing heightened weather activity across many parts of India, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is expected over most parts of south peninsular India till Friday, while thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Monday, the department said.
Thundersqualls are likely over parts of Jharkhand Sunday, and over Odisha Sunday and Monday. Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Odisha till Monday and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Thursday and Friday, the weather department said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely to persist in several parts of east India till Friday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is also likely to continue over many parts of northeast India till Friday.
Several weather systems, including a western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation and three troughs, lie over and near northwest India, the weather bureau said. Under their influence, hailstorms are expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and east Rajasthan till Sunday. Dust storms are seen in parts of east Rajasthan till Sunday and over west Rajasthan till Monday. Thundersqualls with winds gusting up to 80 km per hour are likely over multiple parts of northwest India till Monday, the bureau said.
In central India, a rise in weather activity is expected primarily over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha. Thundersqualls are expected over these regions till Wednesday, with heavy rainfall expected over parts of west Madhya Pradesh till Monday, the bureau said. Hailstorms are also seen over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha till Sunday, it said.
Thundersqualls with heavy rainfall are expected over Gujarat till Tuesday, the weather department said. Hailstorms are also likely over Gujarat Sunday, and over central Maharashtra Tuesday. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over many parts of west India till Friday, the department said.
Heatwave conditions have largely abated from many parts of central India as of Saturday and are likely to keep reducing in the remaining parts of the region from Sunday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are expected over parts of the Konkan region till Sunday, the department added. End
