MUMBAI – The presence of a large cloud band and weather systems over and near north India is likely to increase the intensity of rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next few days, bringing relief from the hot weather, Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, said. Moisture from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is also fuelling weather activity over the region, the agency said.

A vast cloud band currently stretches from Pakistan across northwest and central India, which is likely to increase pre-monsoon weather activity over the northern plains, the weather agency said. A cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir, associated with an active western disturbance.

Moisture incursion from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is aiding in organising widespread cloudiness and thunderstorms across north India, the agency said. Under their influence, many parts of north India are likely to record thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms, gusty winds, and scattered showers over the next few days. Mountainous states are also likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

The extensive cloud cover and increasing thunderstorm activity indicate a sharp rise in atmospheric instability, which is typical of the pre-monsoon transition period, the weather agency said. However, these developments are being driven by regional weather systems and should not be directly linked to the evolving El Nino event in the Pacific Ocean, the agency added.  End
