--US to lift naval blockade around Strait of Hormuz, says Trump

NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump Friday said he may lift the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and will be meeting with top aides in the Situation Room of the White House "to make a final determination" amid expectations of a 60-day extension of the ceasefire with Iran to allow for formal negotiations to continue.

"Ships caught in the Strait due to our amazing and unprecedented naval blockade, which will now be lifted, may start the process of heading home!" Trump posted on Truth Social. "Say hello to your wives, husbands, parents, and families from me, your favourite President!"

Trump also claimed that the US will unearth and destroy Iran's enriched uranium material "in close coordination and conjunction with" Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Iran is said to have stocks of 60% enriched uranium, which is a close threshold for 90% enrichment needed for making a nuclear bomb.

Al Jazeera cited White House sources as saying that the US and Iran have reached an agreement on a deal to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, but Trump is yet to sign on the dotted line. However, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported a source close to the negotiating team as saying that the text of the framework was recently changed and has not yet been finalised or confirmed.

In his rambling post, Trump underlined that Iran must agree to "never have a nuclear weapon or bomb" and the Strait of Hormuz must be immediately open with "no tolls" for unrestricted shipping traffic. "Iran will complete the immediate removal and/or detonation of any water mines that are left," he said, adding that the US has already removed numerous such mines with underwater mine sweepers. Iran has laid a soft blockade of the Strait of Hormuz--through which a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies pass--and is selectively allowing ships to cross the narrow waterway, reportedly in return for a "fee".

Trump claimed that the "nuclear dust" is buried deep under the collapsed mountains "caused by our powerful B2 Bomber attack 11 months ago", and that the US is the only country other than China that has the mechanical capability to dig it out.

"No money will be exchanged, until further notice. Other items, of far less importance, have been agreed to. I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination," Trump added.

Earlier in the day, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran's parliament, the Majlis, and the country's lead negotiator, said Tehran had "no trust" in guarantees. "We have no trust in guarantees or promises, only in actions. We will not take any step before the other side acts first," Ghalibaf said in a social media post.  End
