NEW DELHI – Banks' loans rose 16.2% on year while deposits were up 12.2% on year as of May 15, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday. The credit-to-deposit ratio expanded from a fortnight ago as outstanding loans fell less than deposits during the period.

Bank loans were up 16.0% on year at the end of April, while bank deposits had risen 12.3%. Outstanding advances were INR 211.87 trillion as of May 15, down INR 238.07 billion from a fortnight ago. Of these, non-food loans fell by INR 359.41 billion.

However, deposits slumped by INR 1.80 trillion on fortnight to INR 256.89 trillion on May 15. The credit deposit ratio in the banking system rose to 82.48% as on May 15 from 82.01% as on Apr. 30. The latest reading was the second highest on record, below the 83.04% seen at mid-March.

Investments by banks grew 4.2% on year to INR 69.65 trillion as on May 15 and were up INR 380.26 billion from the previous reporting fortnight. Investments were up only 3.2% on year as of Apr. 30.

In December, the government changed the definition of a reporting fortnight under the banking laws. Under the amended regulation, the definition of "fortnight" has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period--either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.
