NEW DELHI – Conflicting voices from the Indian National Congress on whether Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will step down kept the suspense alive Wednesday. While senior Karnataka legislator R.V. Deshpande said Siddaramaiah had told him that he had decided to resign, state Industries Minister M.B. Patil said the question does not arise.

Separately, Randeep Surjewala, All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Karnataka, said no meeting of the Congress Legislature Party in the state has been called and no final decision on the chief minister's position has been made. He asked the media to desist from speculating on the matter.

Deshpande, who met Siddaramaiah at his residence in Bengaluru, said that when some legislators insisted he should not quit, the chief minister replied that he had given his word to the party leadership and would stand by it. "I was with the chief minister. He said he has decided to resign. I did not question him about why he was resigning. We tried to persuade him to continue," Deshpande told reporters.

However, Minister Patil later said there is "no such question arising".

Meanwhile, some media reports said Siddaramaiah has sought an appointment with Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot Thursday. Siddaramaiah is also slated to hold a breakfast meeting with members of the state Cabinet Thursday.

Speculation has been rife since Siddaramaiah and his deputy, D.K. Shivakumar, the contender for the top post, came to New Delhi and held a six-hour-long meeting with the Congress leadership Tuesday.  End
