MUMBAI – India's food grain output for the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at a record 376.6 million tonnes, up 5.3% from a year ago, because of record production of rice, maize, groundnut, and soybean, according to the third advance estimates released by the government Wednesday. There was a significant increase in the sowing area in the kharif season, along with an increase in the yield of major kharif crops such as paddy, maize, mustard seed, and sugarcane, according to an official release. For 2024-25, India's food grain output was 357.7 million tonnes.
The Centre has pegged the 2025-26 wheat output at 120.7 million tonnes against 117.5 million tonnes a year ago.
The country's rice output for 2025-26, as per the third advance estimates, is pegged at 154.0 million tonnes, compared to 149.1 million tonnes for 2024-25. Production of maize is seen at 55.1 million tonnes, against 42.3 million tonnes, according to the data. The production of nutritious or coarse grains has registered a strong growth, with total output estimated at 74.7 million tonnes, according to the release.
The output of tur is estimated at 3.6 million tonnes, largely unchanged from last year, while that of chana is pegged at 12.5 million tonnes, against 11.3 million tonnes for 2024-25. Chana is the pulses crop grown the most during the rabi season in India.
The government has pegged oilseed output at 43.1 million tonnes against 42.6 million tonnes a year ago. The production of soybean is estimated at 12.6 million tonnes, compared with 15.2 million tonnes. Groundnut output is pegged at 13.1 million tonnes, up from 11.9 million tonnes for 2024-25.
Production of rapeseed and mustard has been pegged at 13.8 million tonnes for 2025-26, against 12.6 million tonnes a year ago. Production is increasing continuously and output of pulses and oilseeds needs to be increased further, for which efforts are being made, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.
Sugarcane production is pegged at 500.1 million tonnes compared to 450.1 million tonnes. Cotton output is seen at 29.0 million bales, against 30.6 million bales in the previous year. One cotton bale is equivalent to 170 kg. Jute production is estimated at 9.2 million bales. One bale of jute is 180 kg.
The third advance estimates clearly indicate that the production situation for food grains, major cereals, oilseeds, and commercial crops in the country remains strong, with several crops reaching record levels, according to the release.
These estimates have been primarily prepared on the basis of information received from the states. The third advance estimates cover the kharif and rabi seasons as well as the summer crop season.
Work by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and its institutions has played a significant role in boosting production estimates of key crops. These efforts include the development of climate-resilient crop varieties, rainfed production technologies, and transfer of research knowledge to farmers' fields, Chouhan said. "During 2025-26, ICAR released 339 crop varieties suited to different agroclimatic regions of the country, including cereals, oilseeds, pulses, commercial crops, and fodder crops," the minister said.
The following table details the third advance crop estimates for key crops for 2025-26 and 2024-25 in million tonnes. It also details the change in percentage terms.
