NEW DELHI - The government will sell up to 2% stake in Coal India Ltd. through an offer for sale, Divestment Secretary Arunish Chawla said Tuesday. The offer for sale will open on Wednesday for non-retail investors and on Friday for retail investors, Chawla said.

The issue includes a base issue of 1% and a greenshoe option of 1%, Chawla said in a post on social media platform X. The floor price for the offer for sale is INR 412 per share. The floor price is at a 10% discount to the stock's closing price of INR 458 on the National Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

"With strong operational and financial performance, consistent returns and attractive dividends, CIL (Coal India) continues to offer a compelling long-term investment opportunity," Chawla said. For the March quarter, Coal India reported a consolidated net profit of INR 108.39 billion on revenue of INR 464.90 billion.

The government holds 63.13% stake in Coal India. If the government exercises the greenshoe option, its shareholding in Coal India will reduce to 61.13?ter the offer for sale. At the floor price, the government will raise around INR 50.78 billion by selling 2% stake in Coal India. If the government reduces its stake by only 1%, it will raise INR 25.40 billion.

The government has set an ambitious target of INR 800 billion from miscellaneous capital receipts in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). Tuesday, Coal India shares ended 0.03% lower at INR 458.15 on the National Stock Exchange.
