MUMBAI – Coal India Ltd. Tuesday said its current inventory levels are sufficient to meet 19 days of consumption, allaying fears of supply shortage amid a rise in demand from domestic thermal power plants. There is a coal buffer of 168 million tonnes to meet the summer demand, the company said in a filing with bourses.

Coal stocks at domestic plants were at 47.6 million tonnes as of Saturday and inventory at the company's own mine heads was 10% higher on year at 113.5 million tonnes as of Sunday. Moreover, there are around 3 million tonnes of coal at transit points such as goods sheds, private washeries, and ports. "Rakes on Run, that is, coal in transit at any point of time is around 4 MTs (million tonnes) making a total of 168 MTs of coal available in the system," the company said.

Coal India said a fall in inventory at coal-fired plants during the peak of summer is a "natural occurrence" rather than a supply crisis. There are around 50 million tonnes of in-situ mine coal on tap, ready for quicker extraction and supply if there is a need, it added.

For the March quarter, Coal India reported a consolidated net profit of INR 108.39 billion on revenue of INR 464.90 billion. At 1330 IST, shares of the company traded at INR 467.05 on the National Stock Exchange, up 2% from Monday.  End
