NEW DELHI - The government Monday allowed consumers a one-month window to apply for termination of liquefied petroleum gas connection after switching to piped natural gas. The 30-day window will be counted from the date of obtaining the PNG connection, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said.

The government also allowed consumers to obtain a "transfer voucher" for restoration of the LPG connection in future in a non-PNG area. "This amendment provides significant relief and flexibility to consumers who may subsequently shift to areas where PNG infrastructure may not be feasible," the ministry said. "The provision is particularly beneficial for transferable employees, migrant households, tenants, students, and/or families shifting to non-PNG areas."

In the wake of the severe energy crisis following the war in West Asia, the government had in March mandated that consumers with PNG connections will neither be allowed to obtain a new LPG connection nor retain an existing additional connection. The order was issued to manage the shortage in availability of the widely used cooking fuel. The government had also barred such consumers from obtaining any refill of their LPG cylinders. Individuals having both LPG and PNG connections were also asked to immediately surrender their domestic LPG connection.

LPG is India's primary cooking fuel, and any disruption quickly affects its availability. India imports about 60% of its overall cooking gas requirements. Of this, around 90% was routed through the now-closed Strait of Hormuz.  End
