--Sitharaman: Geopolitical fragmentation reshaping global supply chains
NEW DELHI – The global supply chains are getting reshaped by geopolitical fragmentation while protectionism is rising even after signing free trade agreements, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Monday. "We must recognise that many countries are holding non-tariff barriers, including stringent sustainability requirements, supply chain due diligence laws and carbon border adjustment mechanisms," she said at TEXPROCIL Export Awards Function in Mumbai.
The European Union is planning to expand the scope of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism by levying duty on 180 more products, including select steel- and aluminium-intensive downstream products, starting 2028. Brussels implemented Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in January, by imposing duty on shipments entering the EU based on their reported carbon.
Sitharaman said the global trading environment has become more uncertain than at any point in the last several decades while competition from various countries remains formidable. "We need to be alert and create opportunities for ourselves. Sustainability is no longer optional. Global retailers from H&M to Zara to Marks and Spencer are embedding sustainability requirements into their sourcing criteria," Sitharaman said. End
