NEW DELHI – Central India, including parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidharbha, is likely to continue to reel under a heatwave or severe heatwave for the next seven days, the India Meteorological Department said. The east adjoining peninsular India is also likely to experience similar extreme heat till Monday, and northwest India from Sunday to Friday.

For northwest India, "heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated or some pockets over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi during 24th-29th May, with severe heat wave conditions likely in some or many pockets during 24th-27th May," the IMD said.

Other northwest states, such as Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, are likely to experience heatwave conditions earlier, from Saturday to Friday, with severe heatwave conditions likely over eastern Uttar Pradesh and west Rajasthan during the period.

In south India, IMD has forecast heatwave conditions over isolated pockets of Telangana from Saturday to Tuesday. "Heat wave conditions very likely in isolated pockets over West Jharkhand during 23rd-25th May; Bihar on 23rd-24th; interior Odisha; Chhattisgarh during 23rd-27th May," it added. In contrast, IMD said southernmost states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu are likely to receive heavy rainfall in the next four to five days.

About the advancement of the southwest monsoon, IMD said that the monsoon has further progressed into most parts of the Andaman Sea, some more parts of the Arabian Sea, and parts of the Bay of Bengal. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon to cover the entire Andaman Sea during the next three-to-four daya, it added.

The monsoon is forecast to enter mainland India on Tuesday, with a model error of plus or minus four days, IMD has said earlier. This is six days before Jun. 1, the normal date of monsoon onset over Kerala.  End
