NEW DELHI – The Reserve Bank of India net sold $9.76 billion worth of dollars in the foreign exchange market in March, according to data released by the central bank Friday. In contrast, the central bank had bought $7.41 billion on a net basis in February and $14.36 billion in March 2025. 

 

In 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the RBI net sold $53.13 billion, the highest ever, up from $34.51 billion in the previous year. This marked the second straight year of net sales, following net purchases of $41.27 billion in FY24.

 

On a gross basis, the RBI bought $19.88 billion in March, marginally down from $21.40 billion in the previous month. It sold $29.64 billion in March, sharply higher from $13.99 billion in February. 

 

The RBI's net outstanding forward foreign exchange sales in March were $103.06 billion, up from $77.67 billion in February. 

 

The RBI bought and sold $3.24 billion each on a gross basis in the currency futures market in March, which resulted in a nil net position. In February, it had bought and sold $1.41 billion each. The RBI's net outstanding sales in the futures segment at the end of March were $1.40 billion, up from sales of $522 million in the previous month.
