MUMBAI – Severe heatwaves are expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh till Sunday, for which a red alert has been issued, the India Meteorological Department said. A red alert has also been issued for severe heatwaves in parts of east Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha till Sunday, the weather department said. A red alert for extreme heat is issued when a severe heatwave persists in the region for more than two days.

The weather department has forecast heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in most parts of northwest India till Thursday. Heatwave conditions are also likely to persist in parts of Vidarbha till Thursday, in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and parts of east India till Tuesday, and in Bihar till Sunday, the department said.

Hot and humid weather conditions are expected in parts of Gangentic West Bengal till Tuesday and in Tamil Nadu on Saturday. Warm night conditions are likely in pockets of Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha till Sunday, in Odisha till Tuesday, and in Telangana till Saturday, the weather bureau said.

The southwest monsoon onset wave remains in the same position as on Thursday, the weather bureau said. Conditions are favourable for further advancement of the monsoon into more parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, the Comorin Area, the Bay of Bengal, and the remaining parts of the Andaman Sea in the next two to three days, the bureau said.

The presence and further movement of the monsoon wave has triggered various weather systems over south peninsular and east India. These are likely to cause heavy rainfall over most parts of south India till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are also likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Saturday, the bureau said.

Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Tuesday, with a few spells of very heavy showers likely till Saturday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Bihar on Monday, the department said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Jharkhand on Sunday and Monday and over Bihar on Monday.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over central Assam, which is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh during the weekend and over Assam and Meghalaya from Saturday to Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over several parts of northeast India till Thursday, the bureau said.

A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan, and an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh. A trough runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh to the upper air cyclonic circulation over interior Odisha. These weather systems are likely to cause hailstorms over parts of Himachal Pradesh till Saturday, while scattered to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of northwest India till Monday.  End
