MUMBAI – A low pressure area is likely to form over the south-central Arabian Sea on Saturday, which could track away from the western coast of India, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The formation and movement of such a weather system could impact the advancement of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, Lakhsadweep, and the southeast Arabian Sea, the weather agency said.
Currently, an east-west trough extends from the south-central parts of Lakshadweep and a cloud cluster is seen with embedded convection over the same area. A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the same region on Friday, and it is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area on Saturday, the weather agency said.
Upon further intensification, such low pressure areas typically move away from the country's west coast, influencing the streamline flow of the Arabian Sea. With the onset of the monsoon around the corner, this might weaken the desired westerly flow over the Lakshadweep Islands, southeast Arabian Sea, the Maldives region, and off the coast of Kerala and Karnataka, the weather agency said. This is likely to reduce rainfall over Kerala and delay the onset of the monsoon, the agency said.
The forecast of the formation and intensification of such a weather system varies widely among different climate models. Clarity about its strength and further path is likely to emerge only after the formation of a low-pressure area. The next 24 hours are likely to be crucial as the wind pattern may be appropriately organised during the period for a better forecast. End
