India records 14% below normal rainfall at 11.8 mm in week to Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded average rainfall of 11.8 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, which was 14% below the normal of 13.8 millimetres for the period, the India Meteorological Department said. During Mar. 1-May 20, the country received 107.5 millimetres of rainfall, 2% above normal for the period, data from the weather department showed.

 

Of the four homogenous regions in the country, one received above-normal precipitation and the other three recorded below-normal showers. Rainfall in south peninsula India was 10% above normal at 18.3 millimetres, the data showed. In northwest India, rainfall was 73% below normal at 2.1 millimetres. Central India recorded 3.7 millimetres of rainfall, which was 11% below normal, while east and northeast India received 7% below normal rainfall at 39.5 millimetres.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in India, 11 recorded 'large deficient' precipitation, nine received 'deficient' rainfall, and six received 'normal' showers, according to the data. Rainfall in five subdivisions was 'large excess', while in three subdivisions it was 'excess.' Two subdivisions did not record any rainfall in the week ended Wednesday.  End
