NEW DELHI – Reforms in multilateral institutions are not only important but urgent too, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at a joint press briefing of the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo Tuesday. He said that in times of global conflicts and tensions, India and the Nordic nations will keep working to strengthen rule-based global order.
The prime minister announced elevating India-Nordic relations to "Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership", which entails deeper cooperation in the areas of blue economy, circular economy, and digital infrastructure apart from an increased collaboration in energy security, climate action, water, and education.
"Our shared commitment towards democracy, rule of law, and multilateralism makes us natural partners. Our shared priorities in technology and sustainability fill our ties with opportunities," the prime minister said.
Modi also underlined that India and the Nordic nations have a "clear and united stand" that there must be no compromise and no double standards on terrorism. The summit saw participation from the prime ministers of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
The leaders agreed to leverage the India-European Union free trade agreement as well as the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement between India and the European Free Trade Association to increase trade and investment. India offered 100% foreign direct investment to Nordic defence firms to build up defence industrial collaboration.
"In the past 10 years, India's bilateral trade with Nordic countries has grown fourfold. Their investment funds are also becoming key partners in India's rapid growth," Modi said.
The prime minister said that the Nordic countries' capabilities in combination with India's talent can create trusted solutions for the world. In this regard, he mentioned Norway's blue economy, Iceland's geothermal energy, Sweden's advanced manufacturing and defence capabilities, Finland's telecom and digital technology, and Denmark's cyber security and health tech capabilities.
India also sought greater cooperation in skill development and talent mobility, as well as in arctic and polar research. End
