MUMBAI – India's liquefied natural gas imports in April fell nearly 30% on year to 1.95 billion standard cubic metres, according to a report released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. The country's natural gas import bill also fell to $900 million during the month from $1.2 billion a year ago.
Imports of LNG were hit by the supply disruptions in West Asia, as the war in the region has kept the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for energy supplies, largely shut since Feb. 28.
In April, consumption of LNG in India fell to 4.70 billion standard cubic metres from 5.65 billion standard cubic metres a year ago, the report showed. Domestic production during the month fell to 2.79 billion standard cubic metres from 2.91 billion standard cubic metres. India's import dependency fell to 41.6% in April from 49.2% a year ago.
Natural gas production fell short of the April target of 3.197 billion standard cubic metres, the report showed. End
