Southwest monsoon enters parts of Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea Sat, says IMD

MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon had advanced into some parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal Saturday, six days ahead of the actual onset date of May 22, the India Meteorological Department said in a release. The monsoon has also entered many parts of the Andaman Sea and Andaman Islands and covered the entire Nicobar Islands Saturday.
With monsoon arrival over the above-mentioned regions, heavy-to-very heavy rainfall is likely over most of these parts. The weather department said isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Sunday and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Sunday.
On the back of very heavy rainfall over parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the weather bureau has issued an orange alert in the region till Monday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka till Tuesday, the weather department said. Kerala is likely to witness isolated heavy rainfall till Monday and the same weather conditions are seen over Lakshadweep till Sunday.
The weather department said the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 26 with a model error of plus or minus four days, which is six days before the normal date of Jun. 1. End
