Govt raises base import price of crude palm oil, cuts for crude palmolein

MUMBAI – The government on Friday changed the base import prices of various types of edible oils, increasing those of crude palm oil and crude soyoil, even as it cut the base omport price of crude palmolein, RBD palm oil, and RBD palmolein, as per a notification of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.

 

The Centre levies import duty ad valorem and reviews base import prices, depending on changes in global prices and foreign exchange rates. The government normally revises base import prices of edible oils every fortnight, and these are used to calculate the duty on these commodities brought into the country.

  

India is the largest importer of edible oils. Palm oil accounts for bulk of the country's imports, with most of it purchased from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, which are the top producers of the commodity.

 

The following table details the base import prices of edible oils compared with the previous levels, in dollars per tonne, and the revision in absolute terms in dollars:
