NEW DELHI – India and the United Arab Emirates Friday signed key agreements pertaining to India's energy security, including bolstering the country's strategic oil reserves, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Abu Dhabi. These agreements come in the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has hit India's oil and gas supplies from the region.

 

The two nations also exchanged memoranda of understanding in the areas of defence, infrastructure, shipping, and advanced technology, imparting further momentum to the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed in 2022. The UAE pledged investment of $5 billion in Indian infrastructure.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Modi condemned attacks on the UAE by Iran during the war, saying that targeting of UAE was "not acceptable". Modi also underlined keeping the Strait of Hormuz "free, open, and safe" as a "top priority". 

 

Iran has imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz – a narrow waterway that connects the oil producing countries in the Persian Gulf to open ocean – since it came under attack from the US-Israel combine on Feb. 28. Tehran has accused the UAE of actively aiding the US and Israel in launching military attacks on Iran.

 

During his address, Modi repeatedly called UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan "brother", and underlined that India would firmly stand shoulder to shoulder with the UAE in the future too. He assured the hosts of extending "every possible cooperation" in ensuring peace and stability in the region.

 

A key outcome of the meeting was a strategic collaboration agreement between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd. and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, which would ensure India's energy security by enhancing strategic petroleum reserves and potential collaboration in liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas storage facilities in India, according to an official statement. This is besides the agreed strategic collaboration on supplies of LPG to India.

 

The two countries also exchanged a framework for strategic defence partnership to strengthen defence industrial collaboration, regional and national security, and sharing of technology.

 

Another important outcome was agreements to set up a ship repair cluster at Vadinar, Gujarat, and skill development in ship-building and repair. These arrangements are meant to position India as a hub for skilled ship-building and ship repair professionals apart from boosting ports and coastal infrastructure.  

 

The two countries also signed an MoU on setting up a supercomputer cluster to boost collaboration in artificial intelligence.  End
