MUMBAI – The well-marked low pressure area over the southwest and westcentral Bay of Bengal is expected to move away from the coastlines of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and intensify briefly into a weak depression, after which it is expected to weaken, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. This weather system is unlikely to become a tropical storm, and its movement away from the Indian mainland is expected to assist the onset of southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around Friday, the weather agency said.
There is a significant divergence among weather models regarding the likely track and intensity of the well-marked low pressure area. Most forecasts suggest that at best, the weather system would briefly strengthen into a weak depression. Despite the seasonal climatology, the weather system is unlikely to become a tropical storm, and is instead likely to head towards the Arakan Coast of Myanmar, the weather agency said.
The movement of this weather system will strengthen the cross-equatorial flow, and a strong stream of southwesterly winds will sweep across the South and North Andaman Sea. Under its influence, the onset of the southwest monsoon is likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on either Friday or Saturday, nearly a week before its normal date of May 23, the weather agency said.
The shift of the low pressure area away from India's east coast will restore the normal pre-monsoon weather pattern over south peninsular India, the agency said. The seasonal north-south peninsular trough will also reestablish from Friday, it said. As such, moderate to heavy showers are likely over parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and south interior Karnataka till Monday. End
