MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was at 63.23 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for 34.5% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 13% from a year ago and 24% above the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 8.21 billion cubic metres, which is 41.4% of the total live storage capacity. A year ago, the water level was over 28.1% of the capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 6.57 billion cubic metres, accounting for over 30.2% of the storage capacity, as against 26.4% a year ago. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 15.34 billion cubic metres, accounting for over 40.3% of the storage capacity, compared with 33.2% a year ago. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 19.07 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, 39.3% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 34.5% a year ago. The water level in the southern region was 14.05 billion cubic metres, 25.4% of the storage capacity, compared with 27.7% a year ago. 

 

India received an average rainfall of 10.1 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 21% below the normal of 12.8 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
