NEW DELHI – Two India-bound ships carrying over 66,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are set to reach India within the next few days, a senior official in the shipping ministry said Thursday.
"Two LPG carriers bound for India have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz," Mukesh Mangal, additional secretary in the shipping ministry, said at a press briefing on West Asia crisis here.
"One of the ships is SYMI, a Marshall Island-flagged LPG carrier, which is carrying 19,965 tonnes of LPG for India. It safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz on May 13, and is scheduled to arrive at Kandla Port in Gujarat on May 16," Mangal said.
The other vessel, NV Sunshine, is a Vietnam-flagged gas tanker with 46,427 tonnes of LPG that crossed the fraught waterway on Thursday, and is expected to arrive at New Mangalore Port in Karnataka on Monday, he added.
Asked if the passing of ships is a goodwill gesture from Iran before the BRICS foreign affairs' meeting currently underway in New Delhi, Mangal said, "It shows our good relations with Iran."
Thirteen India-flagged ships are still stranded in the Persian Gulf as Iran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz and is allowing select vessels to pass through the narrow waterway that connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. Around 30 ships have crossed the Strait of Hormuz with Iran's authorisation since Wednesday evening, according to Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.
The closure of the Strait, combined with damage to various oil facilities in the region during the recent war in West Asia, has also affected India's procurement of crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas, liquefied natural gas, and fertilisers. Besides, skyrocketing energy prices have strained the country's foreign reserves. End
