MUMBAI – Headline equity indices snapped a four-day losing run and ended with marginal gains on Wednesday. Analysts saw this as a pullback rally, as there were no major headways on the US-Iran peace deal and crude oil prices stayed near $110 a barrel. Gains in metal companies largely helped the Nifty 50 index recover its losses from the previous four sessions. Nearly half the constituents of the 50-stock index ended the session in positive territory. The Nifty 50 ended 0.1% higher at 23412.60, up 33.05 points. The BSE Sensex settled 0.1% higher at 74608.98, up 49.74 points.
Broader market indices ended higher, with all mid-cap indices gaining nearly 1%. Small-cap indices settled 0.3% higher each.
However, India VIX indicated a slight rise in investor nervousness, as the volatility index settled 0.8% higher at 19.4250. Sectoral indices showed a mixed performance with most indices ending with gains.
Tata Steel, Adani Enterprises, and Hindalco Industries were among the major gainers in the Nifty Metal index, closing 3-4% higher. Steel Authority of India, up over 14%, ended as the top gainer in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. Shares of SAIL, which notched a fresh record high, closed higher after three sessions of losses. The Nifty Metal index was the highest gainer among its sectoral peers and was over 3% higher.
Hindustan Zinc and its parent company, Vedanta, also gained significantly, aided by higher silver prices and the government's sharp increase in import duties on gold and silver. In a bid to dissuade people from buying gold and curb imports of precious metals, the government on Tuesday increased duties on gold and silver to 15% from 6%. Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta closed at nearly 4% and 6% higher, respectively.
Dixon Technologies (India) ended almost 10% higher and was the second-biggest gainer in the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. Even though the company's consolidated net profit for the March quarter fell for the first time in 17 quarters, it beats the Street's view. The company announced it aims for aggressive growth in the cellphone-making business and information technology hardware business in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), which also helped the stock gain.
Berger Paints India closed 4% higher after the company reported a rise in its net profit for the first time in FY26 for the March quarter. The stock ended higher after two sessions of losses.
Shares of Cipla ended nearly 3% higher. The company, however, reported a sharp year-on-year fall in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter. Its top line also fell marginally on year after 14 quarters of growth. Its net profit fell nearly 55% on year and net sales declined nearly 3% on year.
Bharti Airtel settled nearly 2% higher ahead of its March quarter results later in the day. The company's key financial metrics are expected to post a better on-year growth for the quarter, with a 42% on-year rise in its consolidated net profit. Its consolidated revenue for Jan-Mar is expected to rise over 10% on year.
Automobile and information technology companies limited further gains in the Nifty 50 index. Eicher Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, and Maruti Suzuki India ended 0.5-2.2% lower. IT stocks such as Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, and Wipro closed 0.9–1.5% lower.
Tata Power Co. emerged as one of the top losers in the Nifty 200 index, with over 3% losses. Shares of the company declined after the company reported a 5% on-year fall in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter. The company's bottom line was impacted by the closure of the Mundra plant, whose operations have been suspended since July.
Pine Labs ended as the biggest loser in the Nifty 500 index and was down nearly 14%. Shares of the company fell as the six-month lock-in period of its initial public offering expired Wednesday. The stock closed lower for the fourth straight session and shed nearly 20% during this period.
Torrent Power ended with nearly 9% losses and was among the key drags in the Nifty 500 index. The company's consolidated net profit for the quarter plummeted nearly 70% on year, while revenue fell less than 1%.
Though the rise in import duties on gold and silver helped the metal companies to gain for the session, it pulled down jewellery stocks to losses. Shares of Kalyan Jewellers, Sky Gold and Diamonds, and Thangamayil Jewellery ended 0.5-7.6% lower.
