--IMD: Conditions favour monsoon onset over Andaman, Nicobar around Sat 

 

MUMBAI – Conditions are becoming favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around Saturday, marking an early onset of the season, the India Meteorological Department said. According to the new rainfall criteria, the normal date of monsoon onset over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is May 23. The normal monsoon onset date over mainland India is around Jun. 1, starting in Kerala.

 

The weather department has issued a red alert for heatwave to severe heatwave conditions along with warm night conditions in parts of west Rajasthan till Friday. Warm night conditions are expected to continue in the region till Tuesday, the department said.

 

Heatwave conditions in many regions, with severe heatwave conditions in some pockets, are likely in parts of west Madhya Pradesh till Sunday, the weather bureau said. Heatwave conditions are also expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh from Saturday to Tuesday, in Punjab, Haryana Chandigarh, and Delhi from Sunday to Tuesday, in east Rajasthan till Tuesday, and in east Madhya Pradesh from Friday to Sunday. Similar conditions are also likely in parts of Vidarbha till Tuesday, in central Maharashtra, Marathawada, and Gujarat till Thursday, and in Telangana from Friday to Tuesday, the bureau said.

 

Warm night conditions are likely to prevail in parts of east Rajasthan till Friday, and in Vidarbha and Marathawada till Thursday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are very likely in pockets of Konkan and Goa till Thursday, the department said.

 

The low-pressure area over southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area over the same region in the early hours of Wednesday. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Tuesday, and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Thursday to Saturday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are likely over parts of Jharkhand on Thursday and over Bihar on Saturday, the bureau said. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of east India till Tuesday.

 

A Western Disturbance acting as an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over North Pakistan, and an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south Haryana. A second upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Uttarakhand, the weather bureau said. These weather systems are expected to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over several parts of northwest India till Saturday, the bureau said.

 

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Madhya Pradesh, which is likely to cause a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of Chhattisgarh till Sunday, the weather department said.

 

An east-west trough runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Madhya Pradesh to Manipur, while a trough in the westerlies lies to the northeast of the country, the department said. Under the influence of these weather systems, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday and Monday, and over Assam and Meghalaya till Thursday. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of many parts of northeast India till Tuesday, it said. 

 

A north-south trough runs from southwest Madhya Pradesh to south interior Karnataka, which is expected to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Thursday to Sunday, over Kerala till Saturday, and over south interior Karnataka on Friday and Saturday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are likely over parts of north interior Karnataka on Thursday and Friday, while hailstorms are expected over south interior Karnataka on Friday, the bureau said. Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of south peninsular India till Sunday.  End
