NEW DELHI – Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday won the floor test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, with 144 lawmakers voting in favour of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government and 22 voting against it. With this, the TVK comfortably crosses the simple majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.

Vijay's debutant party, which won 108 seats in the recently concluded Assembly elections, got the support of five legislators from the Indian National Congress soon after. Later, it was also backed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Indian Union Muslim League, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which have two members each, and an independent member, before going into the floor test.

The TVK's tally further swelled after a faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, led by C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani, supported Vijay.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which has 59 members of the legislative Assembly, staged a walkout before the voting. Five members abstained from voting.

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar had asked Vijay to show him letters of support from enough lawmakers before inviting him to form the government. Normally, the governor invites the largest party in the Assembly to form the government, which then has to prove its majority on the floor of the House in the next few days. However, Governor Arlekar's insistence on seeing the letters of support delayed the formation of the government, with his conduct drawing flak from the Opposition, including the DMK.  End
