Banks' investments up 3.2% YoY as of Apr 30 vs 2.9% Apr 15

--CONTEXT: Banks' investments were up 2.9% YoY as on Apr 15
MUMBAI – Investments by banks grew 3.2% on year to INR 69.27 trillion as on Apr. 30, and were up INR 425.84 billion from the previous reporting fortnight, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Wednesday showed. The annual pace of investment growth rose in April-end from 2.9% as of Apr. 15.
Banks' loans rose 16% on year while deposits were up over 12.3% on year as of April-end, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday. Both loan and deposit growth rose from 15.0% on year and 12.2% on year, respectively, a fortnight ago.
Bank loans were at INR 212.12 trillion as of Apr. 30, up INR 2.94 trillion from a fortnight ago. Non-food loans were up INR 2.59 trillion on fortnight at INR 211.08 trillion as of Apr. 30.
Bank deposits as of Apr. 30 rose INR 2.16 trillion from a fortnight ago to INR 258.64 trillion.
In December, the government had changed the definition of a reporting fortnight under the banking laws. Under the amended regulation, the definition of "fortnight" has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period — either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.
