NEW DELHI – The government will release the GDP data for the March quarter and provisional estimates for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) on Jun. 5 instead of the earlier scheduled May 29, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said Tuesday. The ministry revised the release date because "certain critical datasets become available only after a lag of up to two months."

The ministry will release GDP data for Jan-Mar and FY26 on the same day the Reserve Bank of India announces its monetary policy statement. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra is expected to announce the Monetary Policy Committee's decisions at 1000 IST on Jun. 5, while the GDP data will be released at 1600 IST.

State Bank of India has projected GDP growth of 7.2% for the March quarter, down from 7.8% in the December quarter. The government's second advance estimate, released Feb. 27, pegged FY26 growth at 7.6%.

The ministry said it has permanently shifted the release date for the provisional estimates of annual GDP and quarterly estimates of GDP for the March quarter to Jun. 7 of every year, or the previous working day if Jun. 7 is a holiday. Earlier, the GDP data for the March quarter and the financial year were released on the last working day of May.

The decision was made in view of the timelines for corporates to file their annual financial results. "... the statutory timeline for filing audited Q4 (Jan-Mar) and annual financial results by listed companies is 60 days from the end of the financial year, resulting in a large number of companies furnishing their financial statements closer to the deadline of 31st May," the ministry said. Further, the central government's key fiscal data, such as revenue expenditure, capital expenditure, taxes, subsidies, and interest payments, for March will also become available only on the last working day of May, the ministry said.  End
