--Govt source: US trade team likely to visit, dates yet to be decided

NEW DELHI – A US trade negotiation team is likely to visit India soon to hold the next round of bilateral talks, a senior government official said Monday. The dates for the meeting have not been decided so far, the official added.

In April, an Indian delegation visited Washington to discuss easing bilateral market access, customs, non-tariff measures, and technical trade barriers. Commerce Additional Secretary Darpan Jain, who is also India's chief negotiator for the trade deal with the US, had led the team to the US.

The talks have been languishing since February, when the US Supreme Court scrapped the reciprocal tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump. Before the US court ruling, New Delhi and Washington had concluded trade talks, under which the US had offered to lower the reciprocal tariff on India from 25% to 18%. The Trump administration had also scrapped the 25% penal tariff on Indian goods.

After the court's verdict, the terms of that deal are likely to change. The Trump administration is currently imposing a blanket 10% tariff on all trading partners.

The US is among India's top trading partners and accounts for one-fifth of India's exports. In 2025–26 (Apr-Mar), India's exports to the US rose to $87.31 billion from $86.51 billion a year ago and imports increased to $52.97 billion from $45.63 billion a year ago.  End
