NEW DELHI - India's manufacturing sector has scope to improve the quality of standard of its finished goods which will help India position itself as a more "reliable" partner of trade, Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Amardeep Singh Bhatia said Monday. There is an opportunity for India to tap the markets that free trade agreements like the UK and the European Union open as well, Bhatia said.

As the manufacturing sector increases its integration into the value chain, India must identify areas where it can value add, he said. The government has also identified sectors that the manufacturing sector does not tap currently and increasing operations in them will add to value added goods, Bhatia said while speaking at Confederation of Indian Industry's Annual Business Summit 2026.

Over the last year, global trade has seen much ebb and flow, first because of the steep US tariffs and then because of the war in West Asia. While India's total exports have held up so far, they continue to face strong competition from countries such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, and China. India's recent strategy to shield itself from trade disruptions has been to sign free trade agreements, including its top export destination, the US, to gain preferential market access.

Bhatia said that the government will soon roll out the "Made in India" framework which facilitates the brand tag to help India position itself better in the global trade ecosystem. While these enabling provisions will help the manufacturing sector, a lot remains to be done to bridge the gap between raw materials and finished goods. We need to see how we can access intermediate goods better, Bhatia said.

According to Bhatia, geopolitical crisis are also forcing India to reconsider its supply chain. India must continue to move with the flow, and upgrade itself accordingly to match with the current demand.

Even as the government continues to support the sector with both policy and financial support, funding in the ecosystem continues to be limited, he said. He urged the domestic industry to increase their investments in the domestic manufacturing sector to boost its productivity.  End
